The Perfect Candidate
Saudi Arabia | Drama
From Saudi Arabia’s first woman director, Haifaa Al-Mansour (Wadjda, Mary Shelley), The Perfect Candidate follows Maryam, a young doctor, who decides to stand for local council but encounters significant setbacks.
Maryam, an ambitious young doctor, is running in the municipal elections with the simple goal of repaving a damaged road. Al-Mansour cleverly shows Maryam’s family connections (which assist her campaign) as well as exposing differences and intolerances encountered at work (which fuel her defiance to pursue political office). This is a compelling film about a conservative society and a woman trying to forge independence within it.
