Student POV: Future Filmmakers
Future Filmmakers is a free seminar day designed specifically to Year 11 and 12 students considering a career in film or screen. As a part of the event, students will have an opportunity to explore many aspects of the film industry with experienced speakers covering various elements of the filmmaking business.
We chatted with Daria Sheveleva, a previous Future Filmmakers attendee, about how the event encouraged her to pursue a career in Film and TV.
How did Future Filmmakers impact your decision to study Film & TV after high school?
In year 12, I had a passion for film but I wasn’t sure it would be the right path for me to pursue after graduation. Gold Coast Film Festival’s Future Filmmakers event helped me gain insight into the industry and build confidence in pursuing my passion. Now with a Film diploma under my belt, I’m currently undergoing my Master’s degree in Business at Bond University and completing an internship with GCFF!
What would you say is the most important thing you got out of Future Filmmakers?
The experienced guest speakers and panellists uncovered the ins and outs of film production, provided a vast range of career possibilities and gave guidance on how to start out. My class also got a tour of Bond University’s production facilities where we had a super fun practice session with the film gear.
Overall, the seminar humbled my expectations of instantly becoming a Hollywood director. For me, film is not an industry to easily succeed in but hearing from industry professionals on the day helped me understand that nothing is impossible if you are passionate and eager to learn and work hard.
What would you say to a current Film & TV high school student considering attending Future Filmmakers?
Whether you are already set on your career path after school or still hesitant, this event will be worthwhile if you have even the slightest interest in the screen industry. The beauty of Future Filmmakers is that it also allows you to ask industry professionals questions that suit your particular situation. Don’t miss the opportunity because this could be you first step to becoming a professional filmmaker.
