The Gold Coast Film Festival is proud to reveal the winner of our inaugural FilmInk Best Australian Indie Film Award. Romi Trower’s feature film debut What If It Works? was selected from a group of five independent Aussie features included in the 2017 Festival program.
A jury of five Australian film critics from the Australian Film Critics Association and the Film Critics Circle of Australia came together to select the award. The critics included ABC TV News Breakfast critic Zak Hepburn, Screen Daily critic Sarah Ward, Sydney-based FIPRESCI critic Annette Willis, SBS Movies critic Simon Foster and critic/broadcaster/academic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
Having its Australian Premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival on Friday the 28th of April, What If It Works? is actress/writer/director Romi Trower’s debut behind the camera. Starring Anna Samson, Luke Ford and Brooke Satchwell, this charming romantic comedy tells the story of two people struggling to find love while battling their own mental illness. Shot in the street-art covered alleyways of Melbourne, What If It Works? is an exciting, funny, and strikingly creative debut feature from a filmmaker who is bound for huge success in the future.
The FilmInk Best Australian Indie Film award is a new initiative by the Gold Coast Film Festival designed to highlight local, independent film-making. From those crowd-funded films to the good old “max your credit card” production, the award highlights the best of Australian cinema coming from our talented outsiders making features without traditional funding.
What If It Works? will have its Australian premiere at the Arts Centre Gold Coast, 6pm on Friday 28th of April with writer/director Romi Trower in attendance.
