In 2012, we're pulling out the biggest Gold Coast Film Festival EVER!  Running over ten full days - from April 19th to the 29th - this year's festival promises a veritable feast of film, art and industry seminars, all set against a colourful popculture backdrop!

While we are still working out the finer points of this year's phenomenal program, we can now announce a few very special guests...

 

Alan Dean Foster - Master Class

 

 

 

 

 

 

Science Fiction Legend Alan Dean Foster - associated with such films as Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Star Wars, the first three Alien films, Alien Nation, The Chronicles of Riddick, Terminator:Salvation, and two Transformers films - will be attending the festival and hosting a writing masterclass.

Foster’s master class will be a highlight of the 2012 festival program and is a must for anyone who wants to study the intricacies of science fiction and fantasy writing, as well as learn more about the finesse involved in novelising film scripts and adapting other mediums for the screen. The class will include a thirty minute Q&A at the end and will cover a number of topics including:-

- Elements to consider when writing a fantasy series.
- Elements to consider when adapting it for cinema.
- Tips for adapting a novel.
- How to service fans of the books.
- Planning transmedia elements for books and feature films while utilising new media to extend the screen work and continue the audience’s experience.
- Tips for novelising your film.
- Creating supporting materials for your works.
- Things to consider when adapting a video game for screen or literature.
- Advice to aspiring writers in both literature and the screen.

Trevor Howis - Australian Producer

Trevor Howis is an Australian writer and producer. He was the first Australian entrant in the Docfest pitching forum in New Zealand. 

He is currently the head of development for David Hannay, one of Australia's oldest and most respected producers, and is developing a number of projects including an 80's rock adventure with Actress/Producer Joanne Samuel (Mad Max), a revenge slasher with Brian Trenchard Smith (Turkey Shoot)  and a noirish TV Drama with acclaimed director Tony Tilse (Underbelly).  

Trevor has been a strong supporter of The Gold Coast Film Festival since 2009.

 

Jack McCoy - Australian Director and Surf Film Icon

Jack McCoy is an internationally revered surfing cinematographer and director responsible for some of the most beloved and respected surf films ever made.

Famous for films such as Storm Riders, The Green Iguana and Blue Horizon, McCoy will hold a conversational session discussing his career, his passion for the surf and cinema, and what those who wish to follow in his footsteps can to do achieve their goals on the morning of Saturday, the 28th of April.

Later in the evening he will screen the Australian premiere of the director’s cut of his latest film, A Deeper Shade of Blue, and hold a Q&A for fans.

 

 

A Deeper Shade of Blue : The Director's Cut.

A Deeper Shade of Blue is a film about surfing’s deepest roots: in the subconscious; in ancient lore; in the craft of surfboard building; in man’s perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world.

In eleven interwoven chapters, today’s leading surfers are linked to those who came before, for a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a surfer and the soulful underlying power of modern surf culture.

The new cut contains 10 minutes of unseen footage comprising 2 scenes deleted from the original theatrical version of the film. McCoy will discuss the unseen sequences and talk about why they were removed from the original release.

 

Special Screening of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in it's original 35mm print format.

Alan Dean Foster will introduce a very special screening of the first Star Trek film Star Trek: The Motion Picture in it's original 35mm print format and participate in a Q&A after the film.

Foster has the story credit for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. He also penned 10 books based on episodes of Star Trek: The Animated Series, the first six books each consisting of three linked novella-length episode adaptations, and the last four being full-length novelizations of single episodes. He later wrote the novelization of the 2009 film Star Trek, his first Star Trek novel in over 30 years
