When the Dust Settles Updates

Want to know what’s happening with the films we screen outside of the Gold Coast Film Festival? Check below for details.

2009 Opening Film When The Dust Settles - Update

603 nuclear devices were detonated at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan from 1949 until the fall of the USSR in 1991. Kimberley Joseph's short film WHEN THE DUST SETTLES, which opened the 2009 film festival, gives a voice to the local villagers who experienced these explosions from a distance of only 30 miles. The radiation they have been exposed to over a 40 year period is equivalent to 20,000 Hiroshima bombs.

UPDATE: SEP 2011: Kimberly is now preparing to return to Kazakstan for the 5th time. The documentary project now has a new website which shows an extended trailer for the documentary. You can check it out by clicking here. It is estimated that the WHEN THE DUST SETTLES will take up to another year to complete so please keep following the GCFF and Kimberly’s website for updates on the project.

UPDATE: In May 2010, Kimberley and Camille Hardman returned to Moscow, Russia and Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan to continue research and film interviews for her feature documentary WHEN THE DUST SETTLES.  They spent 4 days reviewing archival footage at the Krasnogorsk archive in Moscow, finding beautiful images of early Kazakh life;  the changes that took place during Collectivization under Stalin from 1928-1940, and heart wrenching before and after images of nuclear explosions at the Semipalatinsk Test Site. Another trip is being planned for the end of 2011.  Kimberley would like to thank the GCFF for its continued support of her project.
